Renowned Iranian-American guitarist! Lily Afshar was born in Iran into a musical family and now lives in the United States where she is Professor and head of the guitar program at the University of Memphis. She holds a Masters of Music degree from the New England Conservatory and a Doctorate in Music from Florida State University, and was a performer in the extraordinary set of masterclasses taught by maestro Andres Segovia in California in 1986. Lily Afshar has made seven CDs including A Jug of Wine and Thou, which features traditional Persian music, Hemispheres, which reached no. 7 on Billboard Magazine's classical charts, and Bach on Fire, a recording of her own innovative arrangements of music by the baroque master. She has given numerous concerts in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Australia, frequently drawing on Persian and Azerbaijani folk music for her repertoire, and occasionally playing on the sehtar, a traditional Persian instrument. In recent years, Lily Afshar has performed and taught extensively in her native Iran, and is largely responsible for the emergence of a lively guitar scene in that country.
